1 சண்டையோடு கூடிய வீடுநிறைந்த கொழுமையான பதார்த்தங்களைப் பார்க்கிலும், அமரிக்கையோடே சாப்பிடும் வெறும் துணிக்கையே நலம்.

1 Better is a dry morsel, and quietness therewith, than an house full of sacrifices with strife.

2 புத்தியுள்ள வேலைக்காரன் இலச்சையுண்டாக்குகிற புத்திரனை ஆண்டு, சகோதரருக்குள்ள சுதந்தரத்தில் பங்கடைவான்.

2 A wise servant shall have rule over a son that causeth shame, and shall have part of the inheritance among the brethren.

3 வெள்ளியைக் குகையும், பொன்னைப் புடமும் சோதிக்கும்; இருதயங்களைச் சோதிக்கிறவரோ கர்த்தர்.

3 The fining pot is for silver, and the furnace for gold: but the LORD trieth the hearts.

4 துஷ்டன் அக்கிரம உதடுகள் சொல்வதை உற்றுக்கேட்கிறான்; பொய்யன் கேடுள்ள நாவுக்குச் செவிகொடுக்கிறான்.

4 A wicked doer giveth heed to false lips; and a liar giveth ear to a naughty tongue.

5 ஏழையைப் பரியாசம் பண்ணுகிறவன் அவனை உண்டாக்கினவரை நிந்திக்கிறான்; ஆபத்தைக்குறித்துக் களிக்கிறவன் தண்டனைக்குத் தப்பான்.

5 Whoso mocketh the poor reproacheth his Maker: and he that is glad at calamities shall not be unpunished.

6 பிள்ளைகளின் பிள்ளைகள் முதியோருக்குக் கிரீடம்; பிள்ளைகளின் மேன்மை அவர்கள் பிதாக்களே.

6 Children's children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.

7 மேன்மையானவைகளைப் பேசும் உதடு மூடனுக்குத் தகாது; பொய் பேசும் உதடு பிரபுவுக்கு எவ்வளவேனும் தகாது.

7 Excellent speech becometh not a fool: much less do lying lips a prince.

8 பரிதானம் வாங்குகிறவர்களின் பார்வைக்கு அது இரத்தினம்போலிருக்கும்; அது நோக்கும் திசையெல்லாம் காரியம் வாய்க்கும்.

8 A gift is as a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it: whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

9 குற்றத்தை மூடுகிறவன் சிநேகத்தை நாடுகிறான்; கேட்டதைச் சொல்லுகிறவன் பிராணசிநேகிதரையும் பிரித்துவிடுகிறான்.

9 He that covereth a transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends.

10 மூடனை நூறடி அடிப்பதைப்பார்க்கிலும், புத்திமானை வாயினால் கண்டிப்பதே அதிகமாய் உறைக்கும்.

10 A reproof entereth more into a wise man than an hundred stripes into a fool.

11 துஷ்டன் கலகத்தையே தேடுகிறான்; குரூரதூதன் அவனுக்கு விரோதமாக அனுப்பப்படுவான்.

11 An evil man seeketh only rebellion: therefore a cruel messenger shall be sent against him.

12 தன் மதிகேட்டில் திரியும் மதியீனனுக்கு எதிர்ப்படுவதைப்பார்க்கிலும், குட்டிகளைப் பறிகொடுத்த கரடிக்கு எதிர்ப்படுவது வாசி.

12 Let a bear robbed of her whelps meet a man, rather than a fool in his folly.

13 நன்மைக்குத் தீமைசெய்கிறவன் எவனோ, அவன் வீட்டைவிட்டுத் தீமை நீங்காது.

13 Whoso rewardeth evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.

14 சண்டையின் ஆரம்பம் மதகைத் திறந்துவிடுகிறதுபோலிருக்கும்; ஆதலால் விவாதம் எழும்புமுன் அதை விட்டுவிடு.

14 The beginning of strife is as when one letteth out water: therefore leave off contention, before it be meddled with.

15 துன்மார்க்கனை நீதிமானாக்குகிறவனும், நீதிமானைக் குற்றவாளியாக்குகிறவனுமாகிய இவ்விருவரும் கர்த்தருக்கு அருவருப்பானவர்கள்

15 He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the LORD.

16 ஞானத்தைக் கொள்ளும்படி மூடன் கையிலே ரொக்கம் என்னத்திற்கு? அதின்மேல் அவனுக்கு மனமில்லையே.

16 Wherefore is there a price in the hand of a fool to get wisdom, seeing he hath no heart to it?

17 சிநேகிதன் எல்லாக் காலத்திலும் சிநேகிப்பான்; இடுக்கணில் உதவவே சகோதரன் பிறந்திருக்கிறான்.

17 A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.

18 புத்தியீனன் தன் சிநேகிதனுக்கு முன்பாகக் கையடித்துக்கொடுத்துப் பிணைப்படுகிறான்.

18 A man void of understanding striketh hands, and becometh surety in the presence of his friend.

19 வாதுப்பிரியன் பாதகப்பிரியன்; தன் வாசலை உயர்த்திக் கட்டுகிறவன் அழிவை நாடுகிறான்.

19 He loveth transgression that loveth strife: and he that exalteth his gate seeketh destruction.

20 மாறுபாடான இருதயமுள்ளவன் நன்மையைக் கண்டடைவதில்லை; புரட்டு நாவுள்ளவன் தீமையில் விழுவான்.

20 He that hath a froward heart findeth no good: and he that hath a perverse tongue falleth into mischief.

21 மூடபுத்திரனைப் பெறுகிறவன் தனக்குச் சஞ்சலமுண்டாக அவனைப் பெறுகிறான்; மதியீனனுடைய தகப்பனுக்கு மகிழ்ச்சியில்லை.

21 He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool hath no joy.

22 மனமகிழ்ச்சி நல்ல ஔஷதம்; முறிந்த ஆவியோ எலும்புகளை உலரப்பண்ணும்.

22 A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.

23 துன்மார்க்கன், நீதியின் வழியைப் புரட்ட, மடியிலுள்ள பரிதானத்தை வாங்குகிறான்.

23 A wicked man taketh a gift out of the bosom to pervert the ways of judgment.

24 ஞானம் புத்திமானுக்கு முன்பாக இருக்கும்; மூடனுடைய கண்களோ பூமியின் கடையாந்தரங்களில் செல்லும்.

24 Wisdom is before him that hath understanding; but the eyes of a fool are in the ends of the earth.

25 மூடபுத்திரன் தன் பிதாவுக்குச் சலிப்பும், தன்னைப் பெற்றவர்களுக்குக் கசப்புமானவன்.

25 A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him.

26 நீதிமானை தண்டம்பிடிக்கிறதும், நியாயஞ்செய்கிறவனைப் பிரபுக்கள் அடிக்கிறதும் தகுதியல்ல.

26 Also to punish the just is not good, nor to strike princes for equity.

27 அறிவாளி தன் வார்த்தைகளை அடக்குகிறான்; விவேகி குளிர்ந்த மனமுள்ளவன்.

27 He that hath knowledge spareth his words: and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.

28 பேசாதிருந்தால் மூடனும் ஞானவான் என்று எண்ணப்படுவான்; தன் உதடுகளை மூடுகிறவன் புத்திமான் என்று எண்ணப்படுவான்.

28 Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.
